Here’s the mistake almost every first-time NAS buyer makes: they open a spreadsheet, line up the CPUs and the RAM and the price tags, and pick whichever box gives them the most silicon per dollar. It feels rational. It’s also the wrong question.
A NAS isn’t a PC where the hardware is the product. It’s an appliance where the software is the product, and the hardware is just the thing running it. You’re going to interact with that software every single day — through a phone app that backs up your photos, a web dashboard where you set up shares, a mobile client that lets you stream a movie from your couch. The box hums in a closet. The software is what you actually live with. So the real question isn’t “which one has the fastest chip.” It’s “whose software do I want to be married to for the next five years.” Because a NAS is a five-year decision, minimum. People keep these things far longer than a phone.
Let me name the thing that changed the shape of this decision: Synology’s drive lock-in walkback. This matters, so stick with me.
With its 2025-generation Plus-series boxes — the models most home buyers actually want — Synology quietly changed its rules: it restricted core features like storage pool creation, drive health monitoring, and other storage-pool functions to Synology-branded drives or a short list of “certified” ones. In plain terms: you could no longer just drop in a Western Digital or Seagate drive you already owned and expect the thing to work normally. The backlash was loud, and it was earned. People felt like they were being herded toward Synology’s own, pricier drives. Reviewers roasted it. Then, with the DiskStation Manager 7.3 update, Synology reversed course. Third-party 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs work normally again on those 2025 boxes.
That’s the good news. The catch — the part that got quieter airtime — is that the reversal doesn’t fully cover M.2 NVMe drives. If you want to build a storage pool on the little M.2 SSD slots (for caching or an all-flash setup), Synology still steers you toward its Hardware Compatibility List. For most home users that’s a non-issue, because you’ll be running spinning hard drives in the main bays and that’s where the reversal applies. But it’s worth knowing before you fall in love.
Why spend three paragraphs on one company’s policy in a buying guide? Because it reframes the whole decision. While the lock-in was in effect, “buy Synology” came with an asterisk the size of a house. Now that asterisk is mostly gone — which means we can compare these boxes on what actually matters again: the software, and how much hardware you get underneath it.
So let’s meet the players.
Synology is the iPhone of NAS. Its operating system, “DSM” (DiskStation Manager), is the most polished, most consistent, most beginner-proof software in the category, and it’s not close. The mobile apps are good. The photo manager is good. The setup wizard holds your hand. If you want a NAS that feels like a finished product rather than a weekend project, Synology is the safe answer. The price you pay for that polish is, literally, price — and hardware. Synology’s entry Plus boxes tend to ship with older chips and slower networking than the competition at the same money. You’re paying for the software.
UGREEN is the aggressive newcomer that showed up and started a price war on hardware. Its 2-bay, the NASync DXP2800, gives you a modern Intel N100 processor, 8GB of DDR5 RAM, 2.5-gigabit networking, and two M.2 NVMe slots — for less than what Synology charges for a slower box. The N100’s integrated graphics can transcode 4K video, which matters a lot if you plan to run Plex and stream to a TV. The trade-off is the software. UGREEN’s OS, “UGOS Pro,” is genuinely good and improving fast, but it’s years younger than DSM. Fewer built-in apps, a smaller community to Google when you’re stuck, a shorter track record on long-term support and security updates. You’re buying tomorrow’s hardware and betting the software catches up.
TerraMaster is the value-and-flexibility pick. Its 2-bay F2-424 runs an Intel N95, takes two hard drives plus two M.2 NVMe slots, and lands around the same price bracket. Its OS, “TOS 6,” is a real step up from older TerraMaster software — cleaner interface, proper snapshots, Docker support through its container app. It’s competent. But like UGOS, it’s playing catch-up to DSM on polish and ecosystem. TerraMaster’s other quiet strength: it’s the friendliest of the three toward people who want to install a different OS entirely (like TrueNAS or Unraid) down the road.
Now let’s talk about the checklist items that actually separate them, because “it has 8GB of RAM” tells you almost nothing.
Hardware. On raw specs, UGREEN wins the 2-bay class and it’s not subtle. Modern N100, DDR5, 2.5GbE, dual NVMe slots. TerraMaster’s F2-424 is close behind with an N95 and dual NVMe. Synology’s entry Plus boxes are the weakest on paper — but Synology plays a different game with its higher chip and more RAM headroom on step-up models, and its hardware is tuned around DSM. The one hardware spec I’d actually push you to care about: 2.5GbE networking. If you’ll be moving large files or editing off the NAS, gigabit (the old standard) will bottleneck you hard. UGREEN and TerraMaster include 2.5GbE at this price — the F2-424 actually gives you two of those ports; older Synology boxes often don’t have it at all. That’s a real, felt difference.
Software performance and features. DSM does more, out of the box, with less fiddling — its backup tools (Hyper Backup, Active Backup), photo AI, and app center are the deepest in the category. UGOS Pro and TOS 6 both cover the essentials well now (shares, RAID, snapshots, Docker) but you’ll occasionally hit a “DSM has an app for that and this doesn’t” moment. For a first NAS whose job is back up my stuff and stream my media, all three clear the bar. The gap shows up when you get ambitious.
Price versus what you get. This is where the honest math lives. If you weigh pure hardware-per-dollar, UGREEN wins outright — you get a materially faster machine for less. If you weigh software-per-dollar and time-not-spent-troubleshooting, Synology’s premium starts to make sense, especially for someone who doesn’t want a hobby, just a working backup. TerraMaster sits in between and adds the escape hatch of running your own OS later.
Here’s the one thing I want to leave you with before the table: the number of bays matters less than the expansion path. Everyone agonizes over 2-bay versus 4-bay. The better question is: when this fills up, what do I do? A 2-bay in RAID 1 (two drives mirroring each other) gives you the safety of a backup copy but only one drive’s worth of usable space. That’s the sane starting point for most homes. But check whether the model you want can chain an expansion unit or has those M.2 slots for later, because you will fill it faster than you think. Buy for the exit, not the entrance.
The Takeaway
Buy the software, not the box.
If you want a NAS that just works, that your less-technical family members can also use, and that you’ll never have to babysit — get a Synology. You’ll pay more and get less silicon, and it’s worth it for the DSM experience and the peace of mind. This is the default recommendation for most first-time home buyers, and the drive lock-in reversal in DSM 7.3 removes the one big reason to hesitate. Just don’t count on cheap third-party M.2 drives.
If you’re comfortable Googling your way out of a problem and you want the most machine for your money — especially for Plex media streaming where the N100’s transcoding earns its keep — get the UGREEN NASync DXP2800. It’s the best pure hardware value in the 2-bay class. You’re betting on UGOS Pro maturing, but it’s a reasonable bet.
If you want value with a side of flexibility, or you think you might graduate to TrueNAS/Unraid someday, the TerraMaster F2-424 is the thoughtful middle.
And if you’re realizing you actually want to run apps more than store files — a home media server, self-hosted services, containers as the main event — you might not want a NAS at all. TL;DR — A NAS is a software purchase wearing hardware. Synology (DS225+): best software, weakest specs, now safe again after the drive lock-in reversal — the default pick for most people. UGREEN (DXP2800): best hardware value, younger software — best for Plex and spec hunters. TerraMaster (F2-424): value plus the option to run your own OS later. Care about 2.5GbE more than the CPU, and buy for the expansion path, not the bay count.
