A mini PC is a full desktop that someone put in a box the size of a paperback and, in doing so, quietly took a few things away from you. That’s the whole deal in one sentence. You get near-silence, a power bill that barely moves, and a machine that hides behind a monitor or lives in a media cabinet. In exchange, you give up the two things a tower gives you for free: a slot for a real graphics card, and the room to keep adding parts for years. So before you look at a single spec, get the framing right. You are not shopping for “a small computer.” You’re shopping for a fixed set of compromises, and the only question that matters is which compromise you can live with. A tower lets you fix a bad decision later — wrong GPU, not enough drives, whatever, you open the side panel. A mini PC mostly doesn’t. What you buy is roughly what you keep. That’s why reading the spec sheet correctly matters more here than in almost any other category.
Let me walk through the parts of that spec sheet that actually decide things, in the order they matter.
### The CPU line is the first fork in the road
The processor name tells you which of three very different machines you’re looking at, and people get burned here constantly because the names all look similar.
The first tier is Intel’s N-series — the N100 and its slightly faster sibling, the N150. Don’t let the low numbers fool you into thinking they’re bad; let them tell you what these chips are for. The N150 boosts to about 3.6 GHz versus the N100’s 3.4 GHz, but both run at the same tiny 6-watt power envelope, and honestly the real-world gap between them is small enough that you should just buy whichever is cheaper. These are four-core chips built for one job: sipping power while doing light, steady work. A web browser with a sane number of tabs, office documents, a media player, a home server that mostly sits there waiting. That’s their lane. Push them into heavy multitasking or anything that pins all four cores and they run out of breath fast. The trap — and I’ll come back to this — is buying an N100 box because it’s cheap and then expecting it to feel like your work laptop. It won’t.
The second tier is Intel Core (the “Core i” and newer “Core Ultra” mobile chips) and AMD Ryzen in the 6-to-8-core range, like the Ryzen 7 8845HS you’ll see in a lot of enthusiast mini PCs. This is where a mini PC stops being an appliance and starts being a real computer. Six to eight cores, much stronger integrated graphics, enough headroom for photo editing, dozens of tabs, code compiling, a pile of virtual machines. You pay for it in three ways: higher price, more heat, and a fan you will sometimes hear. If your honest answer to “what will I do with this” involves the word “and” more than twice, this is your tier.
The rule of thumb: match the chip to your peak workload, not your average one. The average of your day is light. The moment that makes you swear at the machine is not.
### RAM and storage: the question is whether you can ever change them
Here’s the spec that quietly decides how long the machine stays useful, and it’s the one buyers skip most. Two words to find on the listing: SODIMM and onboard.
SODIMM means the RAM sits in a laptop-style slot you can pop open and replace. Onboard (sometimes called “soldered” or, on the newest low-power chips, “LPDDR on-package”) means the memory is fused to the board — what shipped is what you have, forever. Neither is automatically wrong. Soldered memory is often faster and lets the box be smaller, which is exactly why premium and ultra-compact models use it. But if you buy an onboard 16 GB machine and 16 GB stops being enough in two years, your only upgrade path is selling the whole thing. On a SODIMM machine you drop in a $40 stick. Decide which of those two futures you’re okay with before you pay.
Storage follows the same logic, plus one number to count: how many M.2 slots. One slot means one drive; when it’s full, you’re done. Two slots is the difference between a toy and a machine you can grow — one fast NVMe drive for the system, a second bigger one for everything else. If you’re eyeing a mini PC as a small home server, two M.2 slots (or an M.2 plus a 2.5-inch SATA bay) isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s the whole point. And a reminder from the external SSD guide: the advertised drive speed matters far less than sustained write and whether there’s a heatsink, and a cramped mini PC chassis is exactly where drives cook themselves.
### Ports are where the small box either grows up or doesn’t
This is the section that separates a mini PC you’ll still like in three years from one you’ll resent. Two features do most of the work.
The first is USB4 or Thunderbolt. On paper it’s “a fast port.” In practice it’s the escape hatch from the mini PC’s biggest limitation — no graphics card slot. A USB4/Thunderbolt port lets you plug in an external GPU enclosure, and suddenly your silent little box can drive a real graphics card for gaming or creative work when it’s parked at your desk, then go back to being tiny when it isn’t. Two honest caveats. One, “USB4” and “Thunderbolt-certified” aren’t quite the same promise — Thunderbolt guarantees the PCIe bandwidth an eGPU needs, while plain USB4 depends on the specific implementation, so read the fine print if eGPU is the plan. Two, even in the best case an eGPU runs roughly 10–20% slower on average than the same card in a desktop — and CPU-bound titles can widen that gap — because you’re squeezing it through a ~40 Gbps pipe. Some enthusiast mini PCs sidestep this with an OCuLink port, which is a direct PCIe x4 link. How fast that link is depends on the CPU’s PCIe generation: on N100/N150-class chips it’s PCIe 3.0 x4, around 32 Gbps, while on Ryzen 8845HS-class machines it’s PCIe 4.0 x4, around 64 Gbps versus USB4’s 40 — and that second case gets you noticeably closer to desktop speed. It’s less plug-and-play, but if maximum eGPU performance is the goal, that’s the port to hunt for.
The second port feature is dual LAN — two Ethernet jacks. Most people never need it, and if that’s you, skip it. But if you’re building a home server, a firewall/router box (pfSense, OPNsense), or anything that routes traffic, dual LAN is the feature that makes it possible at all. It’s a small-box superpower hiding in plain sight, and it’s why mini PCs quietly became the default homelab machine. Pair that with the two M.2 slots from earlier and a modest N150 turns into a genuinely capable little server.

And the mistakes that show up over and over, so you can dodge them:
Buying the cheapest N100 and expecting a work machine. The N100 is genuinely great — at its job. Its job is light and steady, not fast. If your day has heavy moments, spend up to the Core/Ryzen tier and stop resenting the box.
Ignoring whether the RAM is soldered. An onboard 16 GB machine that can’t grow is a two-year machine, not a five-year one. If you want it to last, pay for SODIMM slots or buy more memory than you need today, up front.
Forgetting that these things have fans. A mini PC is not automatically silent. Cheap ones under load can whine, and a whiny box in a quiet living room is a box you’ll unplug. If it’s going near where you sit or sleep, treat noise as a spec, not an afterthought — look for fanless designs or reviews that actually measured it.
The honest summary: a mini PC rewards you for knowing exactly what you’ll do with it and punishes you for guessing. Nail down your peak workload and whether you’ll ever want to upgrade, and the right box more or less picks itself. Guess, and you’ll be selling it on the used market in a year — because unlike a tower, you can’t fix it after the fact.
