Here’s an experiment worth running before you spend a cent. Borrow a friend’s smart scale, put it next to yours, and step on both within sixty seconds of each other. Same body, same hydration, same everything.

The body fat percentages won’t match. Not by a rounding error either — a gap of three, five, sometimes eight percentage points is completely normal.
Now, most buying guides treat this as a scandal. Which one is lying? Which one is accurate? That’s the wrong question, and asking it is exactly how people end up overpaying for a number that was never going to mean what they thought it meant.
Because here’s the thing nobody puts on the box: your smart scale doesn’t measure body fat. It can’t. There is no sensor in existence that counts fat cells through the soles of your feet. What the scale actually measures is electrical resistance — and then it guesses the rest.
Let me unpack that, because once you get it, the entire shopping decision reorganizes itself.
### What BIA actually does
Every consumer body-composition scale runs on “bioelectrical impedance analysis,” or BIA. Don’t let the name intimidate you — the principle is genuinely simple.
The scale pushes a tiny, imperceptible electrical current up through one foot, across your body, and down the other. Then it measures how much the current got slowed down on the trip. That resistance is the impedance, and it’s the only thing the scale truly measures.
Why does that tell you anything? Muscle is roughly three-quarters water — about 73–75% — and packed with electrolytes, so current sails through it. Fat is comparatively dry and conducts poorly, so current fights its way through. Low resistance suggests more lean tissue. High resistance suggests more fat.
But impedance is a number in ohms. It is not a percentage. To get from one to the other, the scale runs your impedance reading — plus your height, weight, age, and sex — through a regression equation. That equation was built by taking a population of people, measuring them on a gold-standard machine like a DXA scanner, measuring their impedance, and fitting a formula that maps one to the other.
And that formula is proprietary. Withings has one. Garmin has another. InBody has several. Each was fitted on a different reference population using different hardware at different frequencies. Feed identical impedance into two different equations and you get two different answers — which is precisely why your scale and your friend’s scale disagree.
So when a product page says “accurate body composition,” parse it carefully. It doesn’t mean the scale measured your fat. It means the manufacturer believes their curve fits people like you reasonably well. Whether you are people-like-you is unknowable from your bathroom floor.
Which leads to the uncomfortable part.
### Why accuracy is the wrong thing to shop for
If you can’t verify the absolute number, buying based on absolute accuracy is buying based on something you’ll never confirm. So drop it. The metric that actually earns its keep is repeatability — does the scale give you the same answer under the same conditions?
Here’s why that reframe changes everything. Suppose a scale reads your body fat two full points high, consistently. Useless? Not at all. If it reads 24% when the truth is 22%, and three months later it reads 21% when the truth is 19%, the trend — down three points — is dead accurate. The bias cancels out. You never needed the absolute number. You needed the direction and the slope.
That’s the whole game. You’re not buying a measurement device. You’re buying a consistent reference point, and consistency is something you can actually evaluate.
But — and this is the part that costs people their results — consistency is mostly not the scale’s job. It’s yours.
Remember that impedance depends on how conductive your body is, and your body’s conductivity is dominated by water. So anything that moves water around wrecks the reading:
Hydration. The big one. Research on BIA reliability has found that normal fluctuations in hydration can swing body fat estimates by roughly 2–4 percentage points, and further than that at the extremes. Dehydration raises resistance, so the scale overestimates fat. Chug half a liter and it swings the other way.
Recent meals. Food and drink in your gut is conductive mass your scale has to interpret. Weigh yourself after dinner and the equation is working with different inputs.
Exercise. This one traps athletes. After a hard session you’re dehydrated, but blood has been redistributed to your limbs and your skin is warm — which lowers resistance. The reading often looks flattering, and it’s noise.
Skin temperature and contact. Cold feet constrict peripheral blood flow. Dry, calloused, or lotioned soles make poor electrical contact. Both distort the reading.
Time of day. You are measurably a different fluid distribution at 7am than at 10pm.
Which produces the single most valuable piece of advice in this entire guide, and it’s free: weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom, before eating or drinking, barefoot, on a hard floor. Every time. Then ignore individual readings entirely and look only at the multi-week trend line.
I’d go further. That protocol matters more than which scale you buy. A $25 scale used the same way every morning will tell you more truth about your body than a $400 scale used whenever you happen to walk past it. If you take one thing from this article, take that.
### Four electrodes versus eight
Now for the one hardware spec that genuinely changes what you get.
Most scales are 4-electrode — two contacts under each foot. Current goes up one leg and down the other. And notice the path: it travels through your legs and lower torso, then takes the shortest route back. Your arms, shoulders, and upper chest are barely in the circuit.
This is the “foot-to-foot” limitation, and it’s structural. A 4-electrode scale is essentially extrapolating your whole body from your lower half. If you’re a runner with heavily developed legs and a modest upper body, or someone carrying weight primarily in the chest and arms, the extrapolation is working against your actual geometry.
8-electrode systems add hand contacts — a retractable handle or grip bar. Now current can run hand-to-foot, hand-to-hand, and foot-to-foot, giving the device multiple independent paths through separate body segments. That’s what unlocks “segmental” body composition — though how far the breakdown goes varies sharply by device, and the marketing rarely makes that clear.
Two devices define this tier. The Withings Body Scan ships with a retractable handle and reports segmental fat and muscle mass across torso, arms, and legs — plus a 6-lead ECG. Worth being precise about the regulatory status here: the FDA clearance covers atrial fibrillation detection via the ECG feature (cleared under the “Scan Monitor” designation), not the body composition estimates. No consumer scale has FDA clearance for body fat accuracy, and any marketing that blurs those two things is blurring them on purpose.
The InBody Dial H30 takes a different route: an 8-point tactile electrode system with thumb electrodes on a handle, running multi-frequency analysis. InBody’s commercial machines are what many gyms and clinics use, and the H30 is the consumer descendant of that lineage. One caveat worth knowing before you spend, because it is the single most misread spec in this category: the H30 reports an upper-body / lower-body balance score, not per-limb figures. Segmental lean analysis broken out by each arm and each leg is not something the H30 does — that starts at the step-up H40. If per-limb numbers are the reason you’re buying, the Body Scan and the H40 are the two devices that actually deliver them.
Is 8-electrode worth the premium? Honest answer: for most people, no. If your question is “is my body fat trending down,” foot-to-foot answers it fine. Segmental data earns its cost in a narrow case — you’re doing structured resistance training and want to know whether your left-right balance is drifting, or you’re rehabbing a limb and tracking whether muscle is coming back on the injured side. That’s a real use case. It’s just not most people’s.
### Where your data actually goes
This is the factor people weigh least and regret most, because a scale isn’t a one-time purchase. It’s a multi-year data relationship.
Every scale funnels readings into its own app — Health Mate for Withings, Garmin Connect, EufyLife, the Renpho app, Zepp for Amazfit. The question that matters is whether it lets data back out.
The exports worth checking before you buy: Apple Health on iPhone, Health Connect on Android (which is now the plumbing that feeds Google’s health app), plus direct hooks to Fitbit, Garmin Connect, Strava, and MyFitnessPal.
Why care? Because your weight is an input other things want. Strava uses it for power-to-weight. MyFitnessPal uses it for calorie targets. A training platform uses it for load calculations. A scale that syncs to Apple Health and Health Connect makes your weight ambient across everything. A scale locked in a walled app makes it a chore.
Withings has one of the widest integration lists in the category, which is a genuine differentiator. Garmin’s Index S2 is the inverse — it feeds Garmin Connect beautifully and treats everything else as an afterthought. It will push weight to Apple Health and Health Connect, but the body-composition fields don’t all survive the trip. Fine if you already live in Garmin, limiting if you don’t. Renpho, despite being the budget pick, syncs to Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, and Samsung Health, which is a surprising amount of openness for the money.
On subscriptions: the good news is the category is largely clean. Core measurements and app history work without paying on the major brands. Withings sells an optional Withings+ tier for guided programs and deeper analysis, but the basic weigh-in-and-track loop doesn’t require it. Still — check before you buy, and check what the free tier retains. An app that graphs only the last thirty days for free is a subscription trap wearing a different hat.
And on privacy: body weight and body fat are health data, and they’re unusually revealing. A weight trend can expose pregnancy, an eating disorder, a chronic illness, or a medication change. Ask two questions. Where is it stored, and can you delete it? A European vendor operating under GDPR gives you a defined deletion right. A budget brand’s account defaults deserve five minutes of your actual attention.
### Safety, which is not optional
Two situations where manufacturer guidance is explicit and you should follow it.
Implanted electronic devices. If you have a pacemaker, ICD, or similar implant, manufacturers instruct you not to use BIA. Garmin’s guidance for the Index scale is that people with pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices should not use it, and it has no mode to switch impedance off. Withings takes a more useful approach — the Body Smart offers a Weight-Only Mode that disables the impedance function entirely, so you get a plain scale and skip the current. If someone in your household has an implant, that mode is a purchasing requirement, not a nice-to-have.
Pregnancy. Withings states its scales have not been tested or validated for use during pregnancy. That is not the same as “dangerous” — it’s the absence of validation data, and manufacturers offer pregnancy modes that track weight without body composition. The reasonable move is to use weight-only tracking and let your care provider handle the rest.
Children are a third caveat. Regression equations for adults are fitted on adult bodies; body fat readings for kids aren’t meaningful, which is why several brands include a baby or child mode that records weight only.

Spend the savings on nothing and start the morning protocol.
Want a good scale that syncs everywhere. Withings Body Smart, around $100–$130. This is the value pick of the category — the same 4-electrode composition engine as the far pricier Body Comp, the widest integration list in the business, and Weight-Only Mode built in. That last feature matters more than its footnote status suggests.
Serious about resistance training, want segmental data. Withings Body Scan if you want genuine per-limb breakdowns; InBody Dial H30 if an upper/lower balance score is enough. Either way, only if you’ll genuinely act on the numbers. If you won’t, an 8-electrode scale is a $300 premium for a prettier chart.
Deep in Garmin. Index S2. Its weight data lands inside Garmin Connect where your training load and body battery already live, and that context is the entire value proposition. Buy it for the integration, not the composition math.
Family scale. Withings Body Smart or Body Comp for auto-recognition across eight profiles with individual privacy, or InBody’s H30 if you need more. Check that whoever’s in your house with an implant or a pregnancy has a weight-only path.
Anyone with a pacemaker or implanted device in the household. Weight-Only Mode is the spec that decides your purchase. Withings has it. Garmin doesn’t. That’s the whole comparison.
Now the wider point, and the one I keep circling back to.
Body composition scales sit in the same awkward spot as most consumer biometrics: the sensor is real, the physics are real, and the number on the screen is several inferential steps removed from either.
