
The Story
Here’s the trap almost everyone walks into when buying a home security camera.
You compare resolution. 2K versus 4K. You read about field of view, night vision, maybe HDR. You pick the one with the best-looking spec sheet at the price you wanted to spend, you mount it, and you feel done.
Then a month later the app tells you your clips expired. Or that person detection is a paid feature. Or that the free tier only keeps a few hours of event video, and the break-in you actually wanted footage of happened two mornings back and it’s gone.
That’s the thing nobody puts on the box. The camera is the cheap part. What you’re actually signing up for is a storage arrangement — a decision about where your video lives, how long it stays there, who else can technically reach it, and what you pay every single month for the privilege. Get that wrong and a $40 camera becomes a $400 commitment. Get it right and a $200 camera can cost you nothing else, ever.
Let me start with the part that makes this easy: the resolution war is over, and it ended in a tie.
Walk through the current lineups and you’ll find 2K is basically the floor. TP-Link’s Tapo C120 shoots 2560×1440. Aqara’s Camera Hub G5 Pro does 2560×1520 off a fairly large 1/1.8-inch sensor with an f/1.0 lens. Reolink’s Argus 4 Pro pushes 4K across a 180-degree dual-lens view. Eufy, Arlo, Ring, Nest — everybody clears the bar where you can read a face at reasonable distance and make out a car.
Does 4K help? Sometimes, at the edges of a wide frame, if you need to crop in on a license plate. But sensor size and aperture matter more than pixel count for the shot you actually care about, which is at night, in bad light, of something moving. That’s the same argument I made in the webcam guide — resolution is the number marketing sells you because it’s easy to print, not because it’s what decides the image.
So if resolution isn’t the differentiator, what is? Money over time, and trust.
### The subscription math nobody does before buying
Let’s put real numbers on it, because the gap is bigger than people expect.
Ring’s plans run roughly $5/month for a single device, about $10/month to cover every device at one location, and around $20/month for the top tier, with annual billing shaving a couple of months’ worth off each. Worth noting: 24/7 continuous recording isn’t in any of those base tiers. It’s a separate add-on at roughly $3/month per standard camera, more on the premium models. That surprises people who assumed the $20 plan meant “records everything.”
Google’s side got renamed — what everyone still calls Nest Aware is now bundled into Google Home Premium, and the tiers land near $10/month and $20/month, with annual pricing offering a discount. Without paying, Nest cameras still do live view, alerts, and two-way talk, but event video history runs 3–6 hours depending on the model, not days. Arlo’s Secure plans start around $8/month for one camera and climb toward the high teens for unlimited cameras, with a professional-monitoring tier well above that.
Now run it out. Three cameras on a multi-device plan at roughly $10/month is about $120 a year. Over five years — a perfectly normal lifespan for a mounted outdoor camera — that’s roughly $600 in subscription on top of whatever you paid for hardware. And subscription prices ratchet. Ring has raised its plan pricing. Google raised Nest Aware pricing and then folded the service into Google Home Premium. Arlo has raised Secure pricing more than once. None of them has ever moved the other direction.
Compare that to the other model. Eufy’s HomeBase S380 hub takes an external drive and scales to 16TB of local storage with no monthly fee, with AES-256-GCM encryption on what it stores per Eufy’s own spec sheet. A Tapo camera takes a microSD card up to 512GB — which TP-Link rates at roughly 680 hours of 2K footage, call it four weeks of rolling coverage — for the price of one decent SD card, once. Reolink sells cameras that record to microSD, to a Home Hub, or to a PoE NVR, and markets the absence of a subscription as the whole point.
The five-year number is where the decision actually gets made. A cloud-subscription setup and a local-storage setup can start within $50 of each other on day one and end up $500 apart by year five. That’s not a rounding error. That’s the difference between two entirely different products, and the spec sheet won’t tell you about it.
### Three ways to store video, and what each one actually costs you
Cloud subscription. You pay monthly, video goes to the vendor’s servers, you get the good AI — package detection, familiar-face recognition, natural-language clip search — and you get history measured in weeks or months. The real advantage isn’t convenience. It’s that a thief can steal your camera and not your evidence. That’s a genuine argument, and it’s the strongest one the subscription model has. The cost is recurring, escalating, and it puts your footage on someone else’s infrastructure.
microSD or local hub. The card sits in the camera or the video lands on a hub in your house. No monthly bill. Nothing leaves your network unless you request a remote view. The catch is real, though: a microSD card is a consumer flash device being written to continuously, forever, which is close to the worst-case workload for that kind of part. Buy a high-endurance card, not the cheapest one, and understand it’s a wear item. And if someone rips the camera off the wall, the footage goes with it — which is exactly why a hub-based system beats card-in-camera for outdoor use.
NVR or home server. A PoE camera runs one Ethernet cable that carries both power and data to a recorder with real hard drives. Reolink’s PoE NVR bundles do this affordably. Ubiquiti’s UniFi Protect does it at the high end — cameras roughly in the $130–$600 range, no subscription at all, but you must buy into their recorder, since Protect is a closed system that requires a UniFi console. What you get is genuine 24/7 continuous recording, not just motion clips, plus retention limited only by drive size. What it costs is installation. You are running cable through walls. If you already went down the home NAS route, this is the natural extension of that same instinct.
### The privacy question, and why “local storage” is a claim, not a guarantee
This is where I’d push back on the easy version of the advice.
“Just buy local storage, it’s private” sounds right. It isn’t automatically true, and there’s a well-documented case proving it. A security researcher found that Eufy cameras — marketed hard on local-only storage — were sending material to cloud servers unencrypted, retrievable through a browser and playable in ordinary desktop video players. Anker eventually acknowledged that its streams had not been end-to-end encrypted as claimed, and committed to fixing it with E2E encryption and WebRTC.
The lesson isn’t “never buy Eufy.” They shipped the fix, and the hub hardware is genuinely capable. The lesson is that “local storage” describes where a file rests, not who can reach it. Those are different questions, and only the second one is about privacy.
There’s a second failure mode that has nothing to do with encryption at all: the account layer. Wyze users saw other people’s camera feeds twice. The first time was brief and small — a web caching bug that let a couple thousand people glimpse a handful of feeds for about half an hour. The second was far more serious: roughly 13,000 users received thumbnails from cameras that weren’t theirs after a caching library mixed up device and user ID mappings. No hacker involved. Just infrastructure doing the wrong thing at scale.
So the privacy checklist that actually matters:
- Is it end-to-end encrypted, specifically? Not “encrypted” — that can just mean TLS in transit, with the vendor holding readable video at rest. Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video is the clearest example of the strict version: clips encrypted with AES-256-GCM, analyzed on your home hub rather than in the cloud, and structured so Apple can’t view the content. Your iCloud+ tier sets the camera count — one camera on the entry plan, up to five on the mid plan, unlimited on the top one — and the video doesn’t eat your storage quota.
- Two-factor on the account, always. The strongest encryption in the world loses to a reused password. This is the same argument as the smart lock guide: the credential is the actual attack surface, not the hardware.
- Does it work if the vendor disappears? A microSD or NVR camera keeps recording. A cloud-only camera becomes a plastic brick.
- Where does the data physically sit, and does that jurisdiction matter to you? For some buyers this is irrelevant. For others it’s the whole decision.
### Indoor, outdoor, and the power decision that quietly sets everything else
Power is the choice people treat as an afterthought and then regret.
Battery cameras mount anywhere in ten minutes, which is why they sell. The compromise is that they can’t record continuously — they wake on motion, which means a delay of a beat or two at the start of every clip, and that beat is sometimes the part you wanted. Recharging is a chore that arrives every few months. Solar panels help a lot outdoors and are worth the small extra cost.
Plug-in wired cameras give you continuous recording and no battery anxiety, and they’re the right default indoors where outlets are everywhere.
PoE is the serious option: one cable, permanent power, no Wi-Fi congestion, and genuine 24/7 recording. It’s the most work up front and the least thought afterward.
One more thing on outdoor cameras: check the IP rating and the temperature range, not just “weatherproof.” Aqara’s G5 Pro is IP65 and rated to operate down to -30°C, which matters more than people think in a cold-winter climate. Prices move constantly, so treat these as ranges: budget wired indoor cameras land around the $30–$60 mark, mainstream battery outdoor cameras roughly $100–$200, hub kits and PoE systems from about $200 into the high hundreds depending on camera count.
Verdict
Small apartment, one or two rooms, tight budget. Get a wired plug-in indoor camera with a microSD slot and a high-endurance card. A Tapo C120 or similar does everything you need — 2K, color night vision, local recording, no monthly bill. Total ongoing cost: zero. Don’t overthink this one.
Watching a baby, a pet, or an elderly parent. You care about latency, two-way audio quality, and reliable live view far more than storage retention. This is the one case where the cloud ecosystems earn their money, because their apps and notification pipelines are simply better tuned. Plug-in power, indoors, and pick whichever ecosystem your phone already lives in.
Front door, driveway, anything outdoors. Buy hub-based or PoE, not card-in-camera. If someone takes the camera, you need the footage to survive, and a microSD card in a stolen camera is no evidence at all. Eufy’s HomeBase route or a Reolink PoE NVR both solve this without a subscription. If you’re deep in Apple’s world and want strict end-to-end encryption, the Aqara G5 Pro over PoE with HomeKit Secure Video is the strongest privacy answer available at a normal price.
A cabin, garage, or anywhere without reliable internet. Cloud cameras are useless here by definition. You want local recording and a camera that stores first and syncs later — microSD or a small NVR, ideally with solar if there’s no outlet.
And the one rule underneath all of them: before you buy, price the subscription out five years. If that number scares you, you don’t want that camera — you want a local-storage camera, and you should decide that now rather than after you’ve drilled the mounting holes. The resolution on the box is the least consequential thing on it.
TL;DR — Resolution has plateaued; 2K is the floor and 4K rarely changes an outcome. The real cost is storage: cloud plans run roughly $5–$20/month and rise over time, which is $500-plus over five years, while microSD, a local hub, or a PoE NVR can be a one-time spend. Cloud’s genuine advantage is that stolen cameras don’t take your evidence. But “local storage” isn’t automatically private — Eufy shipped unencrypted cloud streams while marketing local-only, and Wyze exposed thumbnails to about 13,000 wrong users through caching bugs — so look for actual end-to-end encryption and turn on two-factor. Indoors: wired plus microSD. Outdoors: hub or PoE so the footage outlives the camera. Off-grid: local storage and solar.
