Once you know which camp a TV is in, most of the marketing words stop mattering. OLED gives you perfect blacks and is best in a dark room. A good Mini-LED gets brighter and wins in a sunny living room. QLED without Mini-LED backlighting is just a decent regular LCD with nicer color. Buy for your room and your content, not for the acronym on the box.

The Story
Walk into any electronics store and the wall of TVs is basically a wall of acronyms. QLED. QNED. Neo QLED. Mini-LED. OLED. QD-OLED. They all look stunning under showroom lighting, they all say “4K HDR,” and the price gaps between them make no obvious sense. So let’s do the one thing that actually cuts through it: sort every TV into the two families that really exist.
Family one: LCD with a backlight. This is the vast majority of TVs sold. An LCD panel can’t make its own light — it’s a shutter, basically, a layer of liquid crystals that twist to let light through or block it. So it needs a separate light source sitting behind it. That light source is the backlight, and these days it’s made of LEDs. That’s the whole “LED TV” thing. It was never a new kind of screen. It’s an LCD with LED backlighting, which has been standard for over a decade.
Now here’s where the marketing gets slippery. QLED is in this same family. Don’t let the name fool you into thinking it’s an OLED cousin — it isn’t. QLED is an LCD with a backlight, plus a “quantum dot” film. Quantum dots are microscopic particles that glow in extremely pure colors when light hits them. Samsung popularized the “QLED” label, and it does one real job: better, more saturated color and higher color volume than a plain LCD. What it does not do is change the fundamental limitation. There’s still a backlight behind the panel, and that backlight is where the contrast battle is won or lost.
Which brings us to the actual upgrade inside this family: Mini-LED. This is the one spec in the LCD world that genuinely changes the picture. A traditional LCD backlight doesn’t have many separately controllable zones — an edge-lit set, where the LEDs sit along the border, typically manages only around 8 to 16, and even an affordable full-array backlight offers a few dozen to a few hundred. Mini-LED shrinks the LEDs dramatically and packs in far more of them, pushing the number of independently dimmable zones into the thousands on high-end sets. More zones means the TV can light up the bright parts of the image while keeping dark parts dark, which is exactly the thing regular LCD was always bad at. This is how backlit TVs “fight back” against OLED on black levels. When you see “QNED” (LG) or “Neo QLED” (Samsung), read it as: quantum-dot LCD with a Mini-LED backlight. Same idea, different sticker.
The catch with any backlight-based TV is blooming, sometimes called the “halo effect.” Because a single dimming zone covers a small block of many pixels, a bright object on a black background — think white subtitles, or a star field — can make a faint glow bleed around it. More zones means smaller halos. Zero zones between pixels means zero halos, which is the whole pitch of the other family.
Family two: self-emissive. In an OLED panel, every single pixel makes its own light and can switch itself completely off. No backlight. When a pixel is meant to be black, it’s actually off — true, absolute black, not “very dark gray with the backlight dimmed.” That’s why OLED contrast looks the way it does, and it’s why there’s no blooming at all: there’s no shared backlight to bleed. OLED pixels also switch state almost instantly, which gives it excellent motion clarity and near-zero input lag characteristics that gamers care about.
OLED has two real trade-offs. First, brightness. Self-emissive pixels have historically topped out lower than a good Mini-LED can hit, especially on full-screen bright scenes, so in a room flooded with daylight an OLED can look a little washed out while a punchy Mini-LED powers through. Second, burn-in — the fear that a static logo or news ticker could permanently ghost into the panel. Here’s the honest 2026 read: for normal, varied viewing it’s a non-issue on modern sets. Panels now run pixel-shifting, logo dimming, and automatic refresh cycles that keep it at bay. If you’ll leave the same news channel frozen on screen ten hours a day, it’s worth thinking about. For everyone else, it’s mostly an internet ghost story at this point.
Then there’s QD-OLED, which is Samsung Display’s take on self-emissive. Standard OLED (often called “WOLED,” LG’s approach) uses a white OLED layer with color filters, and adds a white sub-pixel to boost brightness efficiency. QD-OLED instead fires blue OLED light through a quantum-dot color-converting layer. The payoff is richer color volume and higher peak brightness, especially in saturated highlights — QD-OLED closed a good chunk of OLED’s old brightness gap. One quirk worth knowing: because of that quantum-dot layer, early generations of QD-OLED could show a slight raised-black or purplish tint in a brightly lit room with light hitting the screen directly. Newer panels have largely tamed this with improved anti-reflection coatings, though WOLED still tends to hold up a touch better under harsh ambient light. Both are self-emissive, both give you perfect per-pixel blacks, both share the same (small, modern) burn-in mitigations.
So that’s the map. Now the specs that actually decide your purchase.
Brightness and HDR. HDR is where brightness earns its keep, but the number on the box — “peak brightness” — is a trap on its own. Peak brightness is the brightest tiny highlight the TV can flash, not how bright it stays across a whole scene. A rough real-world ladder: around 400 nits is the floor where a TV can accept an HDR signal but the effect is mild; roughly 600 nits is where most reviewers agree HDR starts to feel like HDR; and about 1,000 nits is the widely cited target where highlights really pop. But sustained brightness, contrast, and local dimming matter as much as the peak figure. An OLED with a lower peak number can still deliver more convincing HDR than a cheap LCD with a big peak spec, because its blacks anchor the contrast. Match this to your room: dark room, OLED’s perfect blacks win; bright room, a high-nit Mini-LED wins.
Resolution, size, and distance. Almost every TV worth buying is 4K, and that’s the right target. The useful move is picking size by how far you sit. A common guideline — derived from cinema standards bodies like THX and SMPTE — is a viewing distance of about 1.5× the screen’s diagonal; enthusiasts who want a more cinematic, filling-your-vision image sit closer, around 1.2×. On a 4K panel you can sit as close as roughly 1× the diagonal before individual pixels become visible. As for 8K: for the overwhelming majority of people it’s not worth paying for. At normal living-room distances your eyes can’t resolve the extra pixels, native 8K content barely exists, and the money is far better spent on a better panel or better local dimming at 4K.
Refresh rate and gaming. This is where marketing labels get loud. A “120Hz native” panel physically refreshes 120 times a second. But you’ll also see terms like “Motion Rate 240” or “Clear Motion 480” — those are made-up marketing numbers built from processing tricks, not the real panel refresh rate. To confirm the truth, look for the actual “native refresh rate” spec, and for gaming, check the ports. The features that matter for a PS5 or Xbox Series X are: an HDMI 2.1 port (48Gbps of bandwidth, versus 18Gbps on HDMI 2.0), which is what carries 4K at 120Hz; VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), which syncs the TV to the game’s frame rate so it stays smooth when performance dips; and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which flips the TV into low-lag game mode automatically. A quick console note: both consoles do 4K/120 and VRR; Dolby Vision gaming has been an Xbox-side feature that PS5 hasn’t adopted (a platform decision, so check current support if it matters to you); and you’ll want an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable to actually hit these numbers. Smart OS and extras. Every TV runs some smart platform — Google TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Roku, Fire TV. They differ in layout, app selection, and how many ads they shove at you, and that’s a real annoyance. But it should sit near the bottom of your decision list. A streaming stick costs little and instantly swaps the whole interface, so don’t let a slick menu talk you past a worse panel.
The Takeaway
Here’s the honest way to shop. First, decide your room. A dark or light-controlled room is OLED (or QD-OLED) territory — the perfect blacks are the whole point and you don’t need blistering brightness. A bright, sunny living room leans toward a strong Mini-LED, because it’ll cut through glare in a way OLED can struggle with. That single decision eliminates half the wall of TVs before you’ve read a single spec.
Then read the spec sheet in this order: native refresh rate (not the marketing motion number), HDMI 2.1 with VRR and ALLM if you game, real dimming-zone count on a Mini-LED (more is better, and vague “local dimming” with no number usually means very few), and peak brightness with a grain of salt. Treat “QLED,” “QNED,” and “Neo QLED” as color-and-backlight descriptors, not as a different species from LED. And treat 8K as a feature to skip.

If you take one thing away: the acronym on the box is mostly telling you which color film and backlight a TV uses. It is not telling you which of the two panel families it belongs to, and that — self-emissive versus backlit — is the line that actually changes what you see.
