The Story

Here’s the trap almost everyone falls into when they buy their first mechanical keyboard. They read a couple of reviews, see the words “Cherry MX Blue,” think “sounds cool,” buy it, and then discover their roommate wants to strangle them. Or they grab a slick 60% board because it looks minimal, then realize they have no arrow keys and no idea how to type a bracket.

Buying a mechanical keyboard isn’t hard. But it’s a stack of small decisions, and if you don’t know what each one actually changes, the hobby feels like it has a secret handshake. So let’s decode it. By the end you’ll be able to read a spec sheet and know, roughly, what the thing will feel like before it ever hits your desk.

There are really only five decisions that matter for a first board: the switch, the size, the keycaps, how it connects, and how it’s built. Everything else is flavor.

### The switch is the whole personality

The switch is the little spring-loaded mechanism under each key. It decides how the board feels and how loud it is, and it splits into three families. Don’t let the color names fool you — the color is just a manufacturer’s shorthand for a behavior.

Linear switches go straight down, smooth, no bump. The classic reference is the Cherry MX Red, which triggers at about 45 grams of force. Because there’s nothing interrupting the press, gamers tend to love them — light, fast, consistent. The downside is that “no feedback” can mean more accidental keypresses when you’re typing prose.

Tactile switches add a small bump partway down so you can feel the moment the key registers. The Cherry MX Brown is the poster child here, actuating at about 45 grams, with a tactile bump that peaks around 55 grams. This is the safe middle for people who type all day and game some — you get feedback without a lot of noise. If you have no idea what you want, a tactile switch is the boring correct answer.

Clicky switches give you the bump and an audible click, like the Cherry MX Blue, which actuates at about 50 grams, with the click mechanism peaking near 60 grams. They’re satisfying in a way that’s genuinely addictive. They’re also the reason mechanical keyboards have a reputation for driving coworkers insane. Great for a solo home office. A war crime in an open-plan office or on a work video call.

Notice the actuation forces all sit in a similar range — roughly 45 to 50 grams — with tactile and clicky switches needing a bit more force to push past the bump or click (up to about 55–60 grams). So “heavy vs light” matters less for a beginner than “smooth vs bumpy vs clicky.” Pick the feel first.

### The ecosystem, and why “hot-swap” changed the game

Cherry invented the MX design, but its patent expired years ago, which is why brands like Gateron and Kailh now make switches with the same cross-shaped stem. Practically, that’s great news: the vast majority of modern switches and keycaps share the “MX-style” mount, so they mix and match freely.

The bigger deal is hot-swap. A hot-swappable board has little sockets on the circuit board, so switches just pull out and push in — no soldering iron required. If you’re not sure whether you’ll love Reds or Browns, buy a hot-swap board and you can change your mind later for the price of a bag of switches instead of a whole new keyboard. For a first purchase, I’d treat hot-swap as close to non-negotiable.

### Size: what you’re willing to give up

Layout is just a question of which keys survive the diet. From biggest to smallest:

  • Full-size (104 keys) keeps everything, including the number pad. If you punch numbers into spreadsheets all day, this is you.
  • TKL / tenkeyless (87 keys) chops the number pad and nothing else. You keep the function row, arrows, and nav cluster. It’s the most popular “I want space back but no compromises” size.
  • 75% (~84 keys) squeezes a TKL’s worth of keys into a tighter grid — function row and arrows still there, just packed together with almost no gaps.
  • 65% (~68 keys) drops the function row but keeps arrow keys plus a couple of nav keys. Small, but you don’t lose your arrows.
  • 60% (~61 keys) is letters, numbers, modifiers — that’s it. No function row, no arrows. Everything missing lives on an Fn layer you hold and combine.

The honest advice: a 60% looks fantastic in photos and frustrates a lot of first-timers who reach for an arrow key that isn’t there. If you’re unsure, 65% or TKL is the sweet spot — compact but nothing important is hiding.

### Keycaps: the part you actually touch

Two things matter here — the plastic and the printing.

ABS is cheaper, easy to color brightly, but over months of use it develops a greasy shine where your fingers land. PBT is denser, has a slightly textured surface, and resists that shine for years. It costs a little more and it’s worth it.

For the legends (the letters printed on the caps), doubleshot molds two layers of plastic together so the character is physically part of the cap — it literally can’t wear off. Dye-sublimation bakes the dye into the surface, which also won’t rub off but generally only works dark-on-light. Both beat cheap laser-printed legends, which fade. If you see “PBT dye-sub” or “PBT doubleshot” on a spec sheet, that’s a good sign.

### Connection: wired, or which kind of wireless

Wired is simplest and has zero latency debate. If you go wireless, know that there are two flavors and they are not equal.

A 2.4GHz dongle is a tiny USB receiver that talks to the board on the manufacturer’s own low-latency protocol. It’s fast — good ones run at a 1000Hz polling rate, meaning the board reports its state 1,000 times a second, about 1ms. For gaming, this is effectively as good as wired.

Bluetooth skips the dongle and lets you pair with multiple devices — phone, tablet, laptop — and swap between them. Convenient. But standard Bluetooth HID typically caps around a 125Hz polling rate, so there’s noticeably more lag. The pattern to remember: 2.4GHz for speed, Bluetooth for juggling devices. Many boards include both, which is the best of both worlds.

The polling rate arms race that’s happening now — some boards pushing 8000Hz — is real but mostly marketing for a first keyboard. 1000Hz is the standard competitive gamers actually use, because past that the difference is imperceptible for typing.

### Build: the stuff enthusiasts obsess over

Two terms will show up and you should at least recognize them. Stabilizers are the little support mechanisms under the long keys — spacebar, enter, shift. Bad ones make those keys rattle. Decent factory stabilizers are one of the biggest quality-of-life differences between a cheap board and a nice one.

Gasket mount is the current darling of the hobby. Instead of screwing the internals straight into the case, the board is suspended on soft gaskets, which gives a slightly cushioned typing feel and a deeper, rounder sound. It’s genuinely nicer, but it’s a “you’ll appreciate it later” feature, not something a first-timer needs to chase.

The Takeaway

If you remember one thing: buy hot-swap, pick a tactile switch, and get a 65% or TKL. That combination is almost impossible to regret. It gives you feedback without noise, saves desk space without hiding keys, and lets you change your mind about switches without buying a new board.

Everything past that — gasket mounts, 8000Hz polling, doubleshot PBT in a rare colorway — is the rabbit hole, and the rabbit hole is genuinely fun once you’re in it. But you don’t have to enter it to have a great keyboard. The mistake isn’t buying the “wrong” board; it’s buying a board where a bad decision is baked in permanently. Hot-swap is your insurance against that.
