Here’s the dirty secret of wireless charging: the number on the box is the least important spec.
Every Qi2 wireless charger listing screams a wattage at you — 15W, 25W, sometimes a made-up “50W” that means nothing. And almost every buyer picks based on that number. But if you’ve ever set your phone on a pad overnight and woken up to a device that’s warm and only 80% full, you already know the watts lied. The real bottlenecks in wireless charging aren’t power. They’re alignment and heat. Qi2 exists specifically to fix the first one, which quietly fixes a lot of the second. Understand that, and choosing a charger gets simple.
Let me back up. Wireless charging works by inductive coupling — a coil in the charger and a coil in your phone pass energy across a tiny air gap. The catch: those two coils have to line up almost perfectly. Off by a few millimeters and efficiency falls off a cliff. The energy that doesn’t make it into your battery doesn’t vanish — it turns into heat. So a misaligned “15W” pad might actually be feeding your phone 7-8W while cooking the back of it. That’s the entire problem old Qi pads had. You’d drop your phone on, it’d land slightly off-center, and you’d never know it was charging at half speed.
Qi2’s headline feature is the Magnetic Power Profile — a ring of magnets that snaps the phone into the exact right position over the coil, every single time. That’s it. That’s the whole trick. And it’s borrowed directly from Apple, whose MagSafe pioneered the magnetic-ring idea in 2020. The Wireless Power Consortium (the group behind Qi) essentially standardized MagSafe’s approach and opened it to everyone. So when people ask “is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?” — functionally, close enough. Qi2 phones and cases snap onto MagSafe accessories and vice versa. The difference is MagSafe is Apple’s closed, certified club; Qi2 is the open, cross-platform version that Android phones can join too.
Now the part that trips everyone up: Qi2 comes in two tiers, and they are not the same purchase.
The original Qi2 (rolled out on iPhone 15) is magnets plus up to 15W. Then came Qi2 25W, the consumer name for the Qi v2.2.1 spec — same magnetic alignment, but the ceiling jumps to 25W with more precise magnets and a tighter tolerance. To actually hit that 25W you need a phone that supports it — the iPhone 16 line on iOS 26 (the iPhone 16e is the exception; it has no MagSafe or Qi2 at all), and on Android the Pixel 10 Pro XL — and a wall adapter that can feed it: a USB-C Power Delivery brick rated 30W or higher. Buy a Qi2 25W pad, pair it with a weak 5W adapter, and you’ve bought a 25W charger that charges at a crawl. Then there’s the Android asterisk, and it’s a real one. Apple builds the magnets into every recent iPhone. Samsung, for a while, did not — they leaned on a workaround called “Qi2 Ready.” A Qi2 Ready phone has no magnets of its own; it relies on you buying a special magnetic case to provide the alignment ring. No case, no snap, no reliable alignment. It technically charges, but you’re back to the guess-and-hope positioning of old Qi. Pixel 10 phones put the magnets in the phone (though only the Pixel 10 Pro XL hits the full 25W). Samsung’s current Galaxy S flagships — the S25 and S26 — still leave the magnets out and expect a case to supply them. So “does this phone support Qi2?” has an annoyingly device-specific answer. Check whether your phone has magnets built in before you assume the snap-on experience.
One more myth worth puncturing. People say wireless charging “wrecks your battery.” The honest version: wireless is genuinely less efficient than a cable — you lose energy to that air gap, and the extra heat is what stresses a lithium battery over time. That part’s true. But the doom is overstated. Good Qi2 alignment means less wasted heat, and phones throttle wireless charging on temperature to protect the cell. For overnight or desk-side topping up, the real-world battery cost is small. If you’re charging a nearly-dead phone in a hurry, though — plug in a cable. Every time.

If you own a recent iPhone, buy Qi2 (or Qi2 25W if you have an iPhone 16 and want the ceiling). The magnets are already in your phone, so it just works. If you’re on Android, do the two-minute homework first: magnets in the phone, or “Qi2 Ready”? If it’s the latter, budget for a magnetic case or you’re not really getting Qi2. And whatever tier you pick, check the box for a bundled PD adapter — a shocking number of “25W” chargers ship with no brick at all, and your old 5W plug will choke it. Form factor is where you actually spend money, so match it to your desk. A pad is cheapest and best for a nightstand — but you can’t glance at the screen. A stand props the phone up at an angle, so notifications and video calls stay visible while it charges; for most people this is the sweet spot. A 3-in-1 charges phone, watch, and earbuds together — clean, but here’s the landmine: the watch cradle is device-specific. An Apple Watch will not charge on a Qi pad, period — it uses Apple’s own proprietary magnetic puck. Galaxy Watch is similar — some older models tolerate a plain Qi pad, but current ones really want Samsung’s own charger. So a 3-in-1 sold “for iPhone” won’t charge a Galaxy Watch, and vice versa.
