The Story

Here’s the thing about robot vacuums: the number everyone quotes — suction, measured in Pascals — is the one that matters least. Walk into any listing and you’ll see “8,000 Pa!” splashed across the top like it settles the argument. It doesn’t. A robot vacuum isn’t a stat line. It’s a tiny appliance that has to survive your floor plan, your flooring, your dog, and your patience. Two people can buy the exact same well-reviewed machine and one loves it while the other returns it in a week. The machine didn’t change. The house did.

So instead of chasing the biggest number, let’s sort the four things that actually decide whether a robot vacuum makes your life easier: how it navigates, how hard it sucks, how (and whether) it mops, and how much it empties and cleans itself. Get those four matched to your home and the price sorts itself out.

### Navigation is the one that decides everything

If you only understand one part of this, make it navigation. It’s the difference between a robot that cleans your house and a robot that bumps around your house.

The cheapest models use what’s politely called “random” or “bounce” navigation. No map. The robot drives in a straight line until it hits something, turns a random-ish direction, and repeats. On a small studio with one open room, that’s… fine, honestly. Give it enough time and it’ll cover the floor. But put it in a two-bedroom with hallways and furniture and it misses spots, re-cleans others, and has no idea where it’s already been. It can’t do “clean the kitchen only,” because it has no concept of a kitchen.

The step up is LiDAR — a little spinning turret on top that fires a laser 360 degrees, thousands of pulses a second, and builds a centimeter-accurate map of your home in real time. This is the one you want. A LiDAR robot cleans in tidy back-and-forth rows, knows every room, lets you draw no-go zones on your phone (“stay out of the cat’s water bowl corner”), and remembers multiple floors so you can carry it upstairs and it knows where it is. Because the laser doesn’t need light, it maps a pitch-black room at 2 a.m. exactly as well as noon.

The third option is vSLAM, which navigates with a camera instead of a laser. It’s usually cheaper and it’s genuinely good at recognizing things — a camera can tell a shoe from a charging cable. But it leans on lighting. In a dim room its accuracy drops, because it’s essentially trying to see. The best premium machines now run a camera and a laser together, using each for what it’s good at: the laser maps, the camera identifies. But if you’re choosing between a laser-only mid-range model and a camera-only budget one, the laser wins for reliable everyday cleaning.

### Suction: real, but oversold

Suction does matter — just not the way the box implies. On bare hard floors, almost any modern robot picks up crumbs and dust fine; you don’t need a monster. Suction earns its keep on carpet and pet hair, where the machine has to pull debris up out of fibers. That’s where a higher figure helps.

But Pa is only half the story. Airflow sealing, brush design, and whether the brush is a bristle roller or an anti-tangle rubber one matter just as much as the headline pressure. A well-engineered 5,000 Pa robot can out-clean a badly sealed 8,000 Pa one. Treat the number as a rough tier, not a verdict: light floors and hard surfaces, you’re covered almost anywhere; carpet and shedding pets, aim for the higher end and pay attention to whether the brush is designed not to wrap itself in hair every three days.

### Mopping is where the “same feature” means five different things

This is the trap. Two robots both say “mopping.” One drags a damp cloth behind it, leaving a faint wet smear that mostly just relocates dust. The other presses spinning circular pads into the floor with downward force and actually scrubs. Those are not the same product.

The tiers, roughly: a passive flat pad wets the floor — fine for a light freshen-up, useless on dried-on stuff. Vibrating pads buzz thousands of times a minute for real scrubbing on hard floors. Rotating/spinning pads with applied pressure scrub hardest and handle sticky messes best. And the good ones lift the mop — using carpet detection to raise the pad (or the whole robot) a few millimeters when it rolls onto a rug, so it doesn’t drag a wet cloth across your carpet. If you have any carpet at all, mop-lift is close to mandatory. Without it you’re choosing between mopping and carpet, not both.

### The dock: this is what you’re really paying the big money for

The jump from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand isn’t mostly about the robot. It’s the dock.

A basic self-empty dock sucks the robot’s dustbin into a sealed bag, so instead of emptying a tiny tray every couple of days you swap a bag every month or two. That alone is the single best quality-of-life upgrade for pet owners and allergy sufferers. The premium all-in-one docks go further: they wash the mop pads, refill the robot’s clean-water tank, drain the dirty water, and blow-dry the pads with heat so they don’t grow that damp-mop funk. Some even dose detergent.

It’s genuinely close to hands-off. The catch is honest: these docks are big (they need counter- or floor-space and an outlet — most use internal tanks you top up, and only some premium models optionally plumb in for truly hands-free water), they’re the reason the price doubles, and they add consumables — bags, filters, detergent — that quietly cost money over time.

### A quick reality check on obstacle avoidance

Marketing loves showing a robot gracefully steering around a shoe and, notoriously, a pile of pet waste. Camera-and-laser obstacle avoidance has gotten genuinely good — the best models score near-perfect in torture tests full of cables and socks. But “near-perfect” isn’t “perfect,” and the pet-waste demo is the one you should be most skeptical of. If avoiding accidents is your actual reason for buying, treat it as a nice-to-have that works most of the time, not a guarantee. Pick up the cables anyway.

Prices are broad tiers, not fixed — sales blur the lines constantly, and features that cost $1,500 a couple of years ago now show up mid-range.

Now match it to your home:

Hard floors plus a shedding pet? This is the toughest combo and the one worth spending on. Prioritize higher suction with an anti-tangle brush, a proper rotating or vibrating mop, and — above all — a self-empty dock so you’re not dumping a hair-clogged bin every day. Mostly carpet and rugs? Suction and mop-lift matter more than a fancy mop. You want it to clean carpet hard and not drag a wet pad across it. Don’t overpay for elaborate self-washing mop stations you’ll barely use — put the money into suction and navigation instead.

Want to touch it as little as humanly possible? This is the only case where the premium all-in-one dock is clearly worth it. Empties itself, washes and dries its own mops, refills its own water. You’ll pay double and feed it consumables, but if “I never want to think about this again” is the goal, that’s what the money buys. A robot vacuum with an all-in-one self-wash dock is the category to shop.

Small studio, tight budget, bare floors? Genuinely — an entry model is fine. Don’t let the spec wars talk you into a machine built for a house you don’t have. Random navigation in one open room does the job, and you keep several hundred dollars.

One last honest note: the robot vacuum you’ll actually keep using is the one whose maintenance you can live with. A cheaper machine you empty willingly beats a flagship whose dock you resent refilling. Buy for your floors and your patience — not for the biggest number on the box.
